What is Matariki?

Matariki is the star cluster commonly known across the world as Pleiades. For Māori, the rising of Matariki signals te Mātahi o te Tau, the Māori New Year. The appearance of Matariki in the morning sky is a sign for people to gather, to honour the dead, celebrate the present, and plan for the future.

Drawing on insights from Professor Rangi Mātāmua (Tūhoe), an expert in Matariki, as well as resources from Mānawatia a Matariki, Te Papa and our local city councils, we have curated a series of displays and events for the public to enjoy.
